For many A-level students, UCAS Clearing can seem like a daunting process, however, it’s an essential part of the admissions journey for many young people.Â
There are many reasons why people apply to university through clearing, it may be because they didn’t receive the results they required to get on to their course of choice, they have changed their minds about their initial course or university, they didn’t receive any offers, or they had a change of heart about attending university.Â
With A-Level Results Day on the horizon, we will be providing you with all the information you need to navigate through UCAS Clearing 2024.Â

UCAS Clearing is a system which helps universities fill any remaining places on their courses, and provides a second chance for young people to secure a university place.Â
This year, the UCAS Clearing system is open from the 5th of July until the 21st of October 2024. Which means, you have until October to secure a place at a UK university through clearing, if you don’t meet your expected grades on results day.Â

Many students will enter UCAS Clearing after A-level Results Day, if they have not met their offer conditions, or want to change to a different course than they have already decided upon.Â
After logging into UCAS Track, you can see whether you are eligible for clearing, and you will then receive a clearing number. This number is crucial for the next steps, as it allows universities to access your application.
If you are applying to university through clearing this year, you search for vacancies within the UCAS search tool.Â

With A-Level Results Day taking place on Thursday 15th August, here at X1 we’re here to support you through this critical period.Â
So if you need advice on navigating UCAS clearing or finding last minute student accommodation, we’re committed to helping you make the best decisions for your future.Â
Below we have put together some essential tips to help you succeed if you apply to university through UCAS clearing.Â

Our first tip is to make sure to familiarise yourself with the clearing system on the UCAS website, knowing how it works will help to reduce stress on results day.Â
Make sure to have your UCAS ID, personal statement, and a list of questions ready and start applying after you’ve received your results. Having all this ready will help when you start calling universities.
You should also make sure to prepare yourself for phoning universities, you can find all of the contact information you may need on university websites or on UCAS listings. Typically, you will need to confirm the grades you have achieved, and answer some questions over the phone.Â
It’s also a good idea to find a quiet and comfortable place where you can make the telephone calls, and grab a notebook and pen ready to list down any information.Â

Whilst it’s important to act quickly when it comes to securing a university place through clearing, we would also advise not to don’t rush into a decision too soon.Â
You should put together a list of courses and universities that interest you, as it will give you a head start on the day if you already have a rough idea on the options available.Â
Make sure to consider the course content, university facilities, and location properly, as you are only able to have one clearing choice at a time.Â
To help you make an informed decision about your university journey you can talk to teachers, family, or career advisors. They will be able to provide you with advice on your next steps after receiving your results.Â
Remember, university is not the only option, there are other higher education routes you can consider. These include apprenticeships and traineeships, overseas studies, gap years and so on.
